Two private gas stations namely BP and Vivo decided to cancel buying fuel oil (BBM) from
Pertamina
With the reason there is an ethanol content on the BBM owned by the state -owned company.
Based on laboratory tests, Base Fuel imported by Pertamina contains 3.5 percent ethanol in the Base Fuel lab test results.Slightly lower than Pertamina BBM products, Pertamax Green with a content of 5 percent.
“Vivo canceled to continue after agreeing (buying) 40 thousand barrels (base fuel), finally not agreed upon,” said Deputy Director of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Achmad Muchtasyar in a hearing with the House of Representatives Commission XII in Jakarta, Wednesday (1/10).

The use of ethanol in a mixture of pure fuel has a bad impact on the engine, including reducing the distance of the vehicle.This is caused by ethanol molecules that contain less energy value than pure gasoline, quoting Bell Performance.
The energy value in petroleum fuel is a function of the amount of carbon bonds in molecules.Gasoline molecules are much longer with more carbon bonds than small ethanol molecules, so you have less energy potential in the mixture fuel.
For example, a mixture of E10 or 10 percent ethanol, has a decline in energy value of more than 3.5 percent to 5 percent.
Then, pure ethanol has a 35 percent lower BTU value of BTU than the number of gasoline equivalents.But the fact that using ethanol concentration is higher than 15-20 percent can cause damage because the engine must be adjusted to take into account the different combustion properties of the concentration.
Another adverse effect of ethanol is that it can absorb water.Pure ethanol has a strong ability to absorb water and this can be a big problem for the type of E10-E85 when entering the engine.
Because, when water accumulates in fuel or storage tank, the water will sink into the bottom of the tank.The effect is certainly corrosion, blockage of filters, and decreased fuel quality.
Vivo and BP canceled
Deputy Director of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Achmad Muchmad Muchtasyar previously explained that Vivo had canceled the purchase plan of 40 thousand barrels (base fuel) from 100 thousand barrels imported by Pertamina.
Achmad explained that Vivo’s decision was caused by ethanol findings of around 3.5 percent in the Base Fuel lab test results.
However, Akhamad claims the ethanol content is still permitted when referring to regulations.He expressed the threshold of the ethanol content according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) below 20 percent.
“This (ethanol content) that makes private gas station friends not continue to purchase (base fuel), because there is the ethanol content,” he said.
Not only Vivo, BP-AKR also helped cancel the agreement to buy BBM from Pertamina.
This cancellation indicates the stage of business negotiations (business to business/B2B) back to the starting point.
Different from the two operators, ShellIndonesia is said to still coordinate with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources regarding the plan to purchase Pertamina’s gasoline fuel.
