Pras Ganesh, Executive Vice President, CISO,
Toyota
Motor Asia said cooperation between the Japanese and Indonesian governments in providing biofuel is key to creating a sustainable and affordable energy ecosystem.
According to Pras, the Toyota company welcomes any cooperation agreement
government-to-government
(G2G) between the Japanese and Indonesian governments regarding the use of biofuels. This is to reduce the use of emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
“We cannot speak on behalf of the Japanese government. Determining policy is entirely their authority. We understand that discussions on automotive policy are currently underway between the Japanese government and the Indonesian government,” said Pras Ganesh in Tokyo, Japan last week.

“We believe the scope of the discussion is quite broad and may include biofuels. However, Toyota is not directly involved in the G2G dialogue, because it needs to be handled between countries. Our role is as demand creators. We have the technology, and our job is to prepare it so that it can be accepted by consumers,” he said later.
Biofuel is a type of fuel made from organic materials or materials known as biomass.Biomass can be processed into biofuel such as plants, organic waste, and algae. These components are very easy to get in Indonesia.

There are two main types of biofuel, namely those made from food crops, such as palm oil, corn or sugar cane. Both biofuels are made from non-food biomass, such as residue from agricultural activities or waste from forestry activities.
Meanwhile, Masahiko Maeda, Chief Executive Officer of Asia Region and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of China Region, Toyota Motor Corporation explained that although Indonesia has great potential to provide biofuel, it really needs the support of both countries.
He believes that support is important to accelerate the provision of affordable energy.
“This approach can be called similar to SMR-
type approach
, everything depends on communication between countries,” said Maeda.
“What is important is how to provide future energy that has great potential at affordable prices. If we create good carbon neutral energy but the price is high, no one will use it,” added Maeda.
He gave the example of Brazil, which is a very successful country in building a biofuel ecosystem. This success followed a decades-long process with government support, strengthening agricultural technology and the development of flexible fuel vehicles.
Maeda thinks that Indonesia has been on the right track in the last few years by actually introducing biodiesel. His job is to be able to implement biofuel at affordable prices and expand development to other liquid fuels such as bioethanol.
“I hope that Indonesia, apart from continuing to develop biodiesel, can also produce and supply better bioethanol. If the current enthusiasm and progress of the Indonesian government continues, this country can create a very competitive energy environment,” concluded Maeda.
